PALU JOLTED BY 5.7 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE
Palu, INDONESIA, March 2 (ANTARA) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Central Sulawesi town of Palu at 8:04 local time on Monday morning, prompting thousands of local people to scramble out of their homes in panic.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 1.11 degrees southern latitude and 119.85 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 30 kilometers under the sea bed, Meteorological and geophysics agency (BMG) said.
The epicenter was located 24 kilometers southwest of Palu but it has no potential of causing tsunami. However, thousands of local people rushed out of their homes for fear of another possible stronger aftershock.
School students also rushed out of their class rooms and converged at the school yards and to stay away from tumbling walls.
However there was no immediate report of casualty or material damage in the earthquake.
