PRESIDENT OPENS WORLD ISLAMIC ECONOMIC FORUM
Jakarta, March 2 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Monday officially opened the 5th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) which will run until Tuesday (Mar 3).
The theme of the Fifth WIEF is "Food and Energy Resilience, Stemming the Global Financial Economic Crisis."
In his speech on the occasion, the President called on all Muslim countries to cooperate to find way out of the current global economic crisis and to advance the life of Muslims in the world.
With appropriate policies, the crisis could be dealt with and with hard work, the crisis could be changed into an opportunity, he said.
Yudhoyono proposed that rich Muslim countries in possession of great amounts of foreign exchange reserves assist fellow Muslim others by investing in those with agrarian economies.
He said Gulf countries could help improve the welfare of Muslims and solve the current global food shortage problem.
Muslim countries were not only facing the financial crisis, but also the threats of energy, climate change and food crises, he said.
These crises were global, systemic and interrelated and therefore the solutions should also be global and systemic, the Indonesian head of state said.
