FINANCE MINISTER: FEBRUARY INFLATION STILL NORMAL
Jakarta, March 2 (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said the inflation rate in Indonesia reached the normal 0.21 percent in February, this year.
"In the last six months, the February inflation is in average category of above 0.5 percent. Therefore, a 0.21 percent rate is relatively against prices which are much lower in February," Sri Mulyani said at the presidential palace here on Monday.
Even if the inflation rate of February was still normal, the minister said the government remained alert. If the inflation hails from food stuffs, it would reduce the people's buying power.
"Let's look at some of food components especially the rice which rose in February, as the increase had to do with planting season," she said.
According to her, the affect of second stage reduction of fuel oil especially its impact against the transporation tariff was still positive.
In the meantime, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that the inflation rate last February was recorded at 0.21 percent, while the calender year inflation figure was about o.68 percent and the year-on-year figure at 8.60 percent,
"In February there was an inflation of 0.21 percent with the consumer price index recorded at 114.02 percent," BPS Chief Rusman Heriawan said.
Inflation was recorded in 53 out of 66 cities while deflation had happened in 13 cities in February.
The highest inflation rate was recorded in Samarinda (East Kalimantan), namely 1.63 percent while the lowest inflation rate was in Manokwari, Papua, at 0.02 percent.
The highest deflation rate, meanwhile, was seen in Pangkalpinang at 1.06 percent while the lowest deflation rate happened in Tangerang and Banjarmasin at 0.03 percent.
According to BPS, the inflation happened as a result of price increases as shown in the price index of several groups such as foods, ready-to-eat food, cigarettes, cloths and health.
