FEBRUARY INFLATION RATE RECORDED AT 0.21 PERCENT

Jakarta, March 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's inflation rate last February was recorded at 0.21 percent with the calendar-year figure at 0.14 percent and the year-on-year figure at 8.60 percent, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said.

"In February there was an inflation of 0.21 percent with the consumer price index recorded at 114.02 percent," BPS Chief Rusman Heriawan said here on Monday.

He said inflation was recorded in 53 out of 66 cities while deflation had happened in 13 cities in February.

The highest inflation rate was recorded in Samarinda (East Kalimantan), namely 1.63 percent while the lowest inflation rate was in Manokwari, Papua, at 0.02 percent.

The highest deflation rate, meanwhile, was seen in Pangkalpinang at 1.06 percent while the lowest deflation rate happened in Tangerang and Banjarmasin at 0.03 percent.

Rusman said inflation occurred because of price hikes as shown by the increased indice on several groups of items such as food materials (0.95 percent), processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco (0.91 percent), housing, water, electriciy, gas and fuel oils (0.28 percent), clothing (2.85 percent), health (0.17 percent) and education, recreation and sports (0.04 percent).

"Item group that records a declining index is transportation, communications and financial service of 2.43 percetn," he said.

Inflation of main components in February reached 0.68 percent while the rate of inflation of the main components in the 2009 calendar year was 1.12 percent and in the year-on-year 7.42 percent.

Several commodities recording a price increase in February 2009 were among others gold jewelry, rice, sugar, red onions, chilli, chicken meat, clove cigarettes, housing rent, fresh fish, spinach, long beans, water tariff, car, preserved fish, corn, motocycles, wage of laborers, cucumber and rice.

Commodities that recorded a price decline were among others city transportation, gasoline, red chilli, eggs, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, coconuts, steel iron, household fuels and inter-city transportation.

The office recorded a deflation of 0.07 in January with a consumer price index standing at 113.78. Based on it the year-on-year inflation in the month was 9.17 percent.
