Seoul stocks open sharply lower on U.S. tumble
SEOUL, March 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started sharply lower Tuesday as investor sentiment took a beating from overnight Wall Street plunges, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) sank 19.09 points, or
1.87 percent, to 999.72 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
U.S. stocks plummeted to 12-year lows on Monday due to worsening financial woes.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 4.24 percent, to 6,763.29 with the
tech-laced Nasdaq sliding 3.99 percent, to 1,322.85.
The local currency was trading at 1,589 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m.,
down 18.5 won from Monday's close.
