FLOOD SWEEPS AWAY THREE HOUSES IN KANOR, BOJONEGORO
Bojonegoro, INDONESIA, March 3 (ANTARA) - A flood triggered by the overflowing of Bengawan Solo River, has swept away three houses and seriously damaged nine others at Kanor sub district, Bojonegoro District, East Java.
The houses were located near a 10-meter-long dam of Bengawan Solo river at Sembambung village, which had broken down three days ago, Pudjiono of the Bojonegoro district's disaster mitigation office, said here on Tuesday.
The floodwaters, however, started to subside now, he said.
Kanor has been the worst flood-affected area in the district since the past two years because the existing dams along 18 km area were weak, he said.
In Bengawan Solo floods last year, a number of dams in 18 locations from Tambahrejo to Grape villages at Kanor sub district, broke down.
The recent floods have affected 19 villages and some 6,617 residents, and forced 1,882 of them to flee to higher ground.
"However, they started to return to their homes yesterday as the floodwaters subsided," he said.
The floods submerged 720 hectares of rice fields, 5,600 meter-long main roads, 42 school buildings, 25 mosques and 77 smaller mosques, he said.
Meanwhile, Pudjo Buntoro, head of Bojonegoro's Bengawan Solo river water resource management office, said that the local authorities planned to rehabilitate a number of dams permanently with a budget amounting to Rp17 billion from the State Budget (APBN) allocation.***
