FLOODS DAMAGE 121 CLASS ROOMS IN GRESIK

Gresik, Indonesia, March 4 (ANTARA) - Floods have damaged around 121 class rooms in a number of schools at Bungah and Dukun sub districts, Gresik District, East Java.
The worst flood-affected area was Dukun sub district, where 17 school buildings were seriously damaged by the floods, Gresik's Education Service Head Chusaini Mustaz said here on Wednesday.
At Bungah sub district, five elementary schools and one local education office were also affected by the natural disaster, he said.
The floods damaged a total of 22 school buildings consisting of nine elementary schools, four kindergartens, four Islamic primary schools, two Islamic junior high schools, three Islamic senior high schools and one local education office in Gresik, according to Mustaz.
The floods also damaged the schools' furniture, documents and books, he said.
The affected schools would be rehabilitated soon by funds from the state budget as well as contribution from various parties, including students, he said.
The current rainy season has triggered floods and landslides in various parts of Indonesia, including in East Java, Central Java, West Java, South Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, and Aceh provinces.
La Nina, which is developing into Northern Hemisphere Spring 2009, is expected to cause above-average precipitation over Indonesia, during January-April 2009, according to the US NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) recently.***
