FORESTRY MINISTER: TIGER VICTIMS TO GET INSURANCE COMPENSATION
Jakarta, March 4 (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister MS Kaban reaffirmed that the victims as well as losses suffered by residents attacked by wild annimals like tigers would get insurance compensation from the forestry ministry.
"Since the past few years, the forestry ministry has provided an insurance for the victims," the minister said here on Wesnesday.
He said that the people who had their own cattle or even themselves killed by tigers would also receive a compensation.
"It means that people in possession of waterbuffaloes, cows, goats, will receive a compensation, if their annimals are attacked by tigers. For a human being killed by a tiger will receive Rp20 million," Kaban said.
However, Kaban reiterated that people who were attacked and killed by a tiger, but committed illegal logging would not receive a compensation from the forestry ministry.
Attacks on people by tigers in Jambi and Riau had been increasing, according to the minister, caused by the people entering the habitat of the wild animals and therefore it must be avoided.
The minister reiterated that his office never issued a permit for the exploitation of forests or to clear the forest area which happened to be in the habitat of the wild animals.
"There is an indication that the attacked victims are people carrying the order of their bosses to commit illegal logging. An ambulance could arrive at the scene of the attack by a tiger," Kaban said.
Earlier, Director of the Indonesian Environmental Watch (Walhi) of Riau chapter Jhony Setiawan Mundung said the victims of a tiger attack deserved an insurance compensation to mitigate their suffering.
"Each citizen, who falls victim of wild annimals such as tigers, elephants and crocodiles, deserved an insurance compensation," Jhony.
