PNPM PROGRAM CONCRETE EFFORT TO REDUCE POVERTY: PRESIDENT
Bandar Lampung, March 4 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhohono said the government's National Self-Reliant Community Empowerment Program (PNPM) was a concrete effort to reduce poverty and unemployment in the country.
"The concrete efforts to reduce poverty and unemployment are those carried out by the central and regional government such as the extension of assistance under the PNPM scheme," the head of state said when handing assistance under the program here on Wednesday.
In apparent reference to his political opponents which often campaigned through ads and mass media, the president said that poverty could not be reduced with advertisements, banners, talk-shows, and seminars.
"Poverty could only be reduced if all make utmost efforts," President Yudhohono said.
He said poverty and unemployment rates could only be cut through concrete works by governors, district heads and mayors "such as the one now being done."
The president said that the government had set aside Rp20 trillion for PNPM program in 2009, which increased from Rp14 trillion provided in 2008.
"It will need time and a long process to reduce poverty. Reducing poverty is not as easy as turning hands around. Any efforts however will turn out results. If there are people saying the (government) efforts had no results, they similarly humiliate what have been done by governors, district heads and mayors," the head of state said.
On the occasion, Yudhoyono presented Rp366.76 billion worth of direct financial assistance under the PNPM to Lampung province.
The Rp366.76 billion worth of financial assistance was for 137 sub-districts in 11 districts/municipalities in the province of Lampung.
President Yudhoyono handed the assistance at a ceremony at Korpri Square in front of the Lampung governor's office here which was attended by around 5,000 people.
The head of state also dedicated 86.5 kilometers of the eastern trans-Sumatra highway linking Sukadana, Seputih, Banyak and Menggala which were built at a total cost of Rp312 billion. He also presented 4,000 daily necessary packages to a deputation of poor people in Lampung.
