King’s decision to commute death sentence welcomed by UK minister

London, Apr. 27 (BNA): The British Government’s Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Mr. Alistair Burt MP, has welcomed the decision made by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to commute the death penalty of four individuals convicted in a terrorist case to a life sentence. The case involved a coordinated attempt targeting the life of Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF), Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Kingdom, Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, appreciated the position expressed by the British government, adding that recognising His Majesty's efforts and the underlying safeguards and mechanisms demonstrate that such penalties are taken very seriously in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and are applied in only the most extreme of cases.
