WILD ELEPHANT KILLS VILLAGER IN HORRIFYING WAY

Pekanbaru, Riau Province, Mar 5 (ANTARA) - A wild Sumatran elephant early Wednesday morning killed a resident of Balai Makam village in Riau province in a horrifying way.

The villager, Jalinus (83), was killed while he was trying to escape from an attack on his house by a few elephants, according to Retry, director of the Community Social Workers Communication Forum (FKPSM), here on Wednesday.
"The victim's body was torn apart or badly mutilated. His head, legs and arms were severed from his body," Retry said.
She said the condition of Jalinus' body was a shocking reminder of how savage wild elephants could become. It appeared the elephant that attacked Jalinus had knocked him down and then trampled on him repeatedly until his body tore apart.
The elephant was part of a herd that attacked houses, including Jalinus' house, in the Duri-Dumai area. Jalinus was carried by his son, Helmanora (34) in an attempt to escape from the animals' attack.
However, Jalinus fell down after being pushed by the elephants surrounding his house, while his son managed to escape.
"Helmanora was not hurt by the elephants, but he witnessed how his father was tortured by an elephant which had chased his father. But Helmanora could not do anything, while the situation at dawn was chaotic as all villagers tried to save themselves from an invasion by around 40 elephants," Retry said.
Over the past one month, elephants have often come to the village, attacking houses and eating crops.
Every night, some local villagers were on guard as elephants usually approached the village at night. On Tuesday night, Jalinus joined a patrol but after he had returned home at dawn to retire, the herd of elephants entered the village and ransacked houses, jackfruit and coconut trees.
After the attack, the villagers tried to collect the separated parts of Jalinus's body.
"Until now, we are still looking for his eye balls and his jaw. His body parts were scattered all over the spot where he was killed ," Retry said.
