RI ECONOMY STILL FACING HEAVY PRESSURES : PRESIDENT
Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, March 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government had made various efforts to reduce the impact of the world economic crisis but the country's economy was still facing heavy pressures.
"The world economic recession is still going on. Though we are now able to manage it, I have to be honest and admit that the global recession is still posing a heavy burden (to the country's economy)," the president said when opening a 'Tanwir' (regional leadership meeting) of the country's second largest Islamic organization, Muahmmadiyah, here on Thursday.
He said the government had been working hard since six months ago to anticipate the crisis so that a crisis with impact extent similar to that in 1997 would not happen.
The 1997 economic crisis was not anticipated with the right steps so that it ruined the national economy, he said.
"The government, banks and economists have gathered day and night to discuss efforts to reduce the impact of the ongoing crisis. Therefore, we are doing what we can to overcome the problems the crisis had caused," the head of state said.
He said the global financial crisis had happened due to extremely greedy financial transaction practices which sought temporary profits but ignored humanitarian aspects.
"Global governance has not been able to solve the present financial problems, leaving the world's economic system to become even weaker and weaker," he said.
He said the matter should not be ignored so that the government should safeguard the national economy and then take part in global efforts to restructure and correct the world economic system.
President Yudhoyono on the second day of his two-day working visit in Lampung province opened the second 'Tanwir' meeting of Muhammadiyah.
On the occaion, Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamdussin said that Muhammadiyah would always support a government which ran the administration well and correctly.
"Muhammadiyah will not be reluctant to carry out its 'amar ma'ruf nahi mungkar' (doing good deeds and preventing wrong ones) mission, to criticize and to correct the mistakes made by an untrustworthy government," he said.
Muhammadiyah was organizing the meeting to prepare internal rules for the election of an executive board for the 2010-2015 period.***
