UK to help probe BDR mutiny: Stagg

Shillong, Mar 4 (PTI) British High Commissioner to India
Richard Stagg Thursday said the UK, along with the US, would
help probe the recent mutiny in Bangladesh Rifles (BDR).

"Bangladesh Government has asked for help from the US
and UK in probing the mutiny. We will be happy to help,"
Stagg said here in India's north-eastern state of Meghalaya.

Terming the rebellion in BDR headquarters last week
as an internal matter of Bangladesh, he said "May be the
incident will have major ramifications. We will help the new
democratic Bangladesh government to expedite the probe."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already made a formal
request to US Assistant Secretary of State for South and
Central Asian Affairs Richard A Boucher for sending the FBI
(Federal Bureau of Investigations) to Bangladesh to
investigate the killings.

The British High Commissioner in Dhaka has also been
urged to depute the Scotland Yard to Bangladesh to investigate
the 33-hour mutiny by disgruntled border guards that left
many top army officials and their spouses, BDR soldiers and
civilians dead and several other army officials missing. PTI
