S. Korean freighter captain commits murder-suicide in rampage in Vietnam

HANOI, March 7 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean captain committed suicide after
allegedly stabbing one crewman to death and wounding two others in a late-night
rampage aboard their cargo ship anchored in Vietnam, Korean embassy officials
here said Saturday.
Two crewmen were taken to a hospital, but their wounds were not life-threatening,
the officials said.
The freighter W Vivace from South Korea's port of Busan was anchored in the port
of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam when a brawl occurred Friday night. The captain,
identified as a 64-year-old man surnamed Hong, allegedly stabbed a chief engineer
to death and wounded two others before taking his own life, officials said. The
captain was later found hanged, they said.
It was not known why the incident occurred.
The South Korean embassy in Hanoi dispatched its police to Hai Phong to
investigate, while the families of the captain and crewmen left for Vietnam
earlier Saturday, they said.
