US TO IMONITOR ELECTION IN ACEH INFORMALLY

Banda Aceh, March 9 (ANTARA) - The United States is to monitor the legislative election in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province next April 9 by observing the situation informally.
"The United States will not formally send observers to Aceh but only observe the situation informally," US Ambassador to Indonesia Cameron Hume said here on Monday.
Hume made the statement after a closed-door meeting with Aceh Vice Governor Muhammad Nazar in the company of US consul general for the Sumatra region, Seam B Stein.
The US envoy said his country would not officially send a special team of observers to monitor the election in Aceh but assign its consul general in Medan, North Sumatra, to observe the situation.
"We have a consul general in Medan, and although we will not send a special team to monitor the legislative election in Aceh, we will informally monitor the situation in the province, especially during the election process," Hume said.
Hume's visit to Aceh, according the Muammad Nazar, was to obtain first-hand information about post-tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction projects funded by the United States.
In addition, his visit was also intended to witness preparations for the election which is to be participated in by 38 national and six local political parties.
Meanwhile, the European Union said recently that it was ready to monitor the legislative election in Aceh but it was still waiting for the needed invitation from the Indonesian government.
"We are ready to monitor the legislative election process in Aceh but so far we have yet to receive an invitation to do so from the Indonesian government," Harmut Nassuer, the leader of a European Parliamentary delegation, said at a meeting with provincial administration officials here Saturday (February 28, 2009).
An the meeting hosted by the deputy secretary of the Aceh provincial administration, Husni Bahri TOB, members of the European Parliamentary delegation also expressed hope that the Aceh provincial administration would help prepare the necessary procedures for foreign observers.
To that end, Husni Bahri said, the provincial administration had sent a letter requesting the presence of foreign observers in Aceh to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
He said the request was directly conveyed by Governor Irwandi Yusuf to the president when the head of state visited the province on Monday, February 23, 2009.
