Lee Chun-soo suspended for six games for misbehavior to referee

SEOUL, March 10 (Yonhap) -- Prominent South Korean football player Lee Chun-soo
was suspended Tuesday for six games and fined millions of won for his "insulting"
gesture to a referee during an opening match of the 2009 season, the country's
football body said.
On Saturday, the 28-year-old attacker playing for Chunnam Dragons made both
punching and shooting motions towards the referee who ruled out Lee's goal due to
an off-side violation. The Dragons was losing 0-6 to FC Seoul in the middle of
second half at the opener of 2009 K-League.
The umpire did not see it, but the gesture was captured by television cameras.
Lee has since come under harsh criticism by football fans for his misconduct,
deemed to be a direct challenge to the umpires' authority.
A K-League disciplinary committee punished Lee with a six-game suspension and
6-million-won (US$4,000) fine for the inappropriate conduct. It also demanded
that Lee wear a FIFA fair play flag for three football matches.
"Lee's behavior ruined the festive atmosphere of the 2009 K-League season
openers," the committee chairman Kwak Young-chul said. "If players do not respect
referees, a match cannot be played. I know Lee regrets the misdeed, but he should
take responsibility for that."
Lee apologized after attending his disciplinary hearing.
"I want to apologize for my misbehavior to fans who love me and were worried
about me," Lee told reporters. "I accept the punishment and I'll become a new
person."
Lee returned to South Korea last year after a lackluster record in Dutch club
Feyenoord Rotterdam in 2007. Chunnam who scouted Lee from another South Korean
team Suwon Bluewings this year decided to put off paying him wages until he
improves his performance for the team. Lee is well known in South Korea for his
volatile temperament.
He was penalized twice before, for raising the middle finger at opponent's
supporters and swearing at a referee.
The footballer burst into stardom during the 2002 World Cup and moved to Spanish
Real Sociedad in 2003, but returned to play for South Korea's Ulsan Hyundai FC
after a year due to his sluggish performances in the Spanish league.
Lee has scored 38 goals in 105 games since he made his K-League debut in 2002.
