Hynix mulls appeal against U.S. court ruling
SEOUL, March 11 (Yonhap) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc. said Wednesday that it is considering appealing a U.S. court ruling ordering the world's No. 2 computer memory-chip maker to pay an American chip designer US$397 million in damages.
A U.S. district court ruled Tuesday that Hynix pay Rambus Inc. the money for its
infringement of the latter's patents. Rambus sought a court injunction to ban
Hynix's sale of its memory chips in the U.S. in 2005, citing patent violation.
The court, however, rejected a request by Rambus to bar Hynix from selling its
DRAM products in the United States, ordering an out-of-court settlement.
"Hynix may pursue an appeal (against the ruling)," the company said in a
statement. "The court interpreted Rambus's patents very broadly, which Hynix
believes is incorrect under the current law."
Hynix said it plans to seek a court injunction to suspend the payment of damages
while preparing for an appeal.
Hynix had a 20 percent share of the world's DRAM market in 2008, according to the
market researcher iSuppli.
