MEGAWATI, KALLA SIGN FIVE-POINT AGREEMENT


Jakarta, March 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Democratic Party - Struggle (PDIP) leader Megawati Soekarnoputri and Golkar Party chairman Jusuf Kalla signed a five-point agreement, called 'Two Leaders' Agreeent,' at a meeting here on Thursday.
The agreement was read out alternately y by the secretaries general of the two political parties, namely Soemarsono of the Golkar Party and Pramono Anung of the PDIP.
The meeting for political talks was held in a house on Imam Bonjol street, central Jakarta. Megawati Soekarnoputri came to the meeting in a garden in the back of the house accompanied by her husband, Taufik Kiemas who is also chairman of the PDIP's advisory board, PDIP Secretary General Pramono Anung, Tjahyo Kumolo (chairman of the PDIP faction in the parliament and her daughter, Puan Maharani.
Jusuf Kalla was flanked by Golkar Party Advisory Board Chairman Surya Paloh, Secretary General Sumarsono , Vice Chairman Agung Laksono and the party's chief election strategist Burhanuddin Napitupulu
Following are the five points contained in the agreement:
Firstly, both sides agreed to develop a strong government in order to create advancement for the nation and prosperity for the people. Secondly, both sides agreed to strengthen the government in the presidential system based on the message of the 1945 Constitution, a government which has a strong basis of support in the parliament.
They agreed in the third point to strengthen the economic system in order to carry out reliant and sovereign economic system which is oriented to the people's interest. Fourthly, they agreed to foster close political communications as a manifestation of responsibilities of PDIP and Golkar, which were the winners in the 1999 and 2004 general elections.
Fifthly, they agreed to usher in the successful implementation of the upcoming 2009 general elections based on the principles of fairness, justness, directness and freedom as well as on the peaceful and respectable principles.
The agreement was signed by Megawati Soekarnoputri and M Jusuf Kalla without mentioning their respective positions.
