GOVT PREPARING ORGANIC FERTILIZER STANDARD
Jakarta, Mar 12 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Agriculture is preparing a draft Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for organic fertilizer to prevent falsification, and encouraged farmers to apply it.
The remark was made by expert staff of the Minister of Agriculture in charge of empowering farmers Syukur Iwantoro after a discussion on the occasion of Agrinex in Jakarta on Thursday.
An increase in the use of organic fertilziers is important to prevent the farmers from too much relying on chemical fertilizers which often disappears from the market.
According to the agriculture minister, the addition of organic fertilizr on a rice field by up to 500 kg per hectare can boost production by 15-22 percent, compared to if chemical fertilizers are used.
According to Syukur, the oil palm growers had also been encouraged to make their own organic fertilizers from oil palm waste material, shrugging off their dependence on the government.
The oil palm growers could for instance cooperate with cow breeders in the production of organic fertilizers.
To encourage the use of organic fertilizers, the government has also provided organic fertilizer processing machines to the farmers.
