NUMBER OF HIV/AIDS PATIENTS IN RI's GORONTALO INCREASING YEARLY
Gorontalo, March 13 (ANTARA) - The number of HIV/AIDS sufferers in Gorontalo Province has increased from year to year.
Since 2001, the health authorities had detected 31 HIV sufferers and 23 AIDS patients, Suhardi M Nur, deputy head of the AIDS Control Commission of Gorontalo Province, said here on Friday.
During February 2009 alone, three more HIV/AIDS-infected persons were found, he said.
They had been infected with HIV/AIDS virus because of re-use of unsterilized needles and syringes among drug addicts and unprotected sex, he said.
The number of HIV/AIDS sufferers among drugs addicts increased annually, he said.
Suhardi Nur suspected that the findings were actually just a tip of iceberg, which represented not more than 10 percent of the actual number of HIV/AIDS sufferers.
It meant that around 90 percent of HIV/AIDS sufferers had not yet been detected, and they were considered a high risk group for HIV/AIDS virus spreading, he said.
