FORESTRY DIRECTOR GENERAL PLANTS 10 THOUSAND TREES

Sampang, East Java, March 13 (ANTARA) - Forest and Land Rehabilitation Director General at the Ministry of Forestry Indri Astutik on Friday planted 10,000 trees.

The planting of the 10,000 trees occurred in Darma, Camplong subdistrict, Sampang, Madura, East Java province, involving all the regency administrations from the three regencies in Madura, including Bangkalan, Pamekasan and Sumenep.

"The drive was the beginning of "one man one tree" movement which had been projected since February 2009," Indri Astutik said Friday morning.

The number of the trees to be planed throughout Indonesia this year under the program would reach 230 million, which is the number of Indonesia's population.

The tree planting which had already been started last year under the Indonesia planting program had now reached 109 trees of the projected 100 million trees set by the government, in this case the Ministry of Forestry.

Indri Astutik wished that the trees already planted need to be cared for, but it turned out that many of the trees, because of lack of care, eventually dried up and died.

Sampang Regent Noer Tjahja said his administration will provide the necessary money for the care of the trees, as planned by the Director General of Forest and Land Rehabilitation on Friday including for fertilizers and care.

"We will make an evaluation once in every three months and ask for a report to the relevant subdistrict heads on the number of trees that had died, and the number of trees planted," he said.

The planting of the 10,000 trees on Friday was also joined by several social and public organizations as well as students
On the occasion, manuals on accelerated development of Madura island had also been distributed to the regents of the four regencies in Madura by head of the Madura Development Council Achmad Zaini.

He said the guide book covers forest and land arrangement in Madura, concept on the integral development of Madura.

The trees were not only planted in Camplong subdistrict, but in the area of an Islamic boarding school in Jerenguan, Omben subdistrict, Sampang, as well.
