RUPIAH SURGES 15 POINTS EARLY FRIDAY
Jakarta, March 13 (ANTARA) - The rupiah surged 15 points against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here early Friday and thus remained at a level below Rp12,000 per US dollar.
The rupiah traded at Rp11,985/11,995 per US dollar, up 15 points from Rp12,000/12,015 per dollar at the market's close a day earlier.
Bank Indonesia (BI) stayed in the domestic money market to monitor closely the movements of the two currencies, Rully Nova, foreign currency analyst of PT Bank Himpunan Saudara Tbk said here on Friday.
The Indonesian currency was expected to remain within a range of Rp11,975 to Rp12,000, because BI , the central bank, tightly watched trading in rupiahs and US dollars especially by foreign banks, he said.
"We are optimistic that the market is still positive and can later help the rupiah to advance, moreover BI is staying in the market to support the rupiah," he said.
Besides, Indonesia's economy was predicted to manage to grow despite the global financial crisis, he said.
If the upcoming general elections could run smoothly and successfully, foreign funds, which had been withdrawn previously, would come back to Indonesia and it could boost the country's economic growth more rapidly, he said.
"With the improvement of the economy and the increase of market's confidence, the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar will also improve," he said.
