VP CALLS ON ACEH PEOPLE TO PRESERVE PEACE

Banda Aceh, March 13 (ANTARA) - Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla has called on the Acehnese people to maintain peace, especially in the runup to the general elections later this year.

"We are going to implement general elections. There must be harmony among all parties. Peace is crucial," Kalla said when inaugurating 10 infrastructure development projects completed by the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) of Aceh and Nias, here on Friday.

Kalla hoped there would be no more intimidation among the public, because loss of trust and suspicion among each other were the most difficult problems to overcome in creating peace.

He recalled that rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Aceh in the aftermath of the deadly tsunami must be conducted in parallel with peace creation in Aceh.

If peace had not been achieved in July 2005, there would have been no rehabilitation nor reconstruction in Aceh like what happened in Sri Lanka, he said.

He said he was grateful that former GAM (Free Aceh Movement) leaders had also realized the importance of peace in the province.

The Indonesian government and former GAM signed a peace accord in Helsinki on August 15, 2005.

BRR Chairman Kuntoro Mangkusubroto earlier reported that the government had allocated Rp3.451 trillion in funds to continue rehabilitation and reconstruction works even after the BRR term would end next month.

The projects newly inaugurated by Vice President Jusuf Kalla included Sinabang port in Semeuleu district, Cut Nyak Dien airport in Meulaboh district, Tsunami Memorial Building in Sigli district, NAD high prosecution office, and Banda Aceh district prosecution office.

In addition, the vice president dedicated Meulaboh-Tapaktuan road, ADB Aceh Besar bridge, Banda Aceh Archive Building, drinking water supply system in Sabang and Langsa, New Town access road, and a clinic in Aceh Besar district.

The inauguration of the Rp572 billion worth projects is in conjunction with the end of the BRR's mission in Aceh on April 16, 2009.

Aceh was devastated by a gigantic tsunami on December 26, 2004, which killed at least 150,000 people and destroyed most of infrastructures in the province's western coastal regions.
