VP SAYS 50-60 PERCENT OF LABORERS SHOULD STAY AT HOUSING BLOCK
Batam, Indonesia, March 14 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has asserted that 50 to 60 percents of the laborers in the country should stay at adequate high-rise housing block near their work places.
"The workers should no longer stay far away at slum areas from their work places, because according to a survey, 30 percent of their monthly wage is for transportation fare," Kalla said at a function to officiate the construction of a high-rise housing block, funded by PT Jamsostek, in Kabil, Batam, on Saturday.
Kalla said that to be economical, the workers who stayed at housing block near their work places could go to work either on foot, by bike, or by commuter bus.
According to the vice president, as many as 350,000 units of housing block would be built at various cities across the country this year in an effort to reduce the living cost of the people and to improve their welfare.
To improve the people's welfare, the vice president said it was not only by raising the regional minimum wage (UMR) but also by lowering the living cost.
"It is useless to raise the regional minimum wage if the living cost continues to rise," Kalla said, adding that he would continue to monitor the construction of the housing block in Batam.
The construction of the housing block, located in Kabil, Batam, was officiated by the vice president before Riau Islands Governor Ismet Abdullah, State Minister for Public Housing Yusuf Ashari, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris, PT Jamsostek President Director Hotbonar Sinaga, Labour Union organizers, Indonesian Businessmen Association chairman Sofyan Wanandi, and a number of invitees.
The housing block in Kabil is the second to be built by PT Jamsostek after the first one in Muka Kuning, Batam.
On a 100,000 square-meter plot of land, the 21,600 square-meter apartment block with 770 rooms will be built at the investment cost of Rp11,658 billion to accommodate as many as 3,080 workers.
Equipped with clinics, drug store, salon, cyber cafe, telecommunication kiosk, mini market, canteen, and sport facility, the housing block is expected to be completed in November this year.
Meanwhile, Governor Ismet Abdullah said that to reduce transportation fare, Riau Islands provincial administration would provide the workers, who would state at the housing block, with seven commuter buses.***
