S. Korea's 'Breathless' takes top prize at French film fest
SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's "Breathless (Ddongpari)," an independent film by emerging director and actor Yang Ik-jun, won the top honor at a French film festival in the second consecutive win by a Korean film at the event, the festival's Web site said Monday.
"Breathless," features a confused adolescent who finds consolation in accidental
encounters with a high school girl, received the jury award and the Le Lotus du
meilleur film, the grand prize at the Deauville Asian Film Festival.
Another South Korean movie, "With a Girl of Black Soil," won the top honor at
last year's Deauville, founded in 1999. This year's festival was held March
11-15.
With the director himself cast in the leading role, "Breathless" won the top
prize at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January. It also received
the best actor and actress awards at Spain's Las Palmas International Film
Festival last week. Actress Kim Ggot-bi starred as the teenage girl in the movie.
Four South Korean features competed at this year's Deauville festival, including
"Members of the Funeral," "The Chaser" and "The Divine Weapon." "A Frozen Flower"
and "Beastie Boys" were invited to the event's non-competition Panorama section.
