PRESIDENT ASKS PEOPLE TO SHOW MATURITY IN PRACTICING DEMOCRACY

Jakarta, March 16 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on all Indonesians to show to the international community they have maturity in the practice of democracy.
In his address to the nation at the State Palace here on Monday to call on the people to implement this year's elections in successful, secure, and orderly ways, the President asked all parties to maintain the success level of the 2004 elections or even to surpass it this year.
"It is our common responsibility and mission to show the international community that Indonesia is getting more mature in democracy," the president said.
The head of state reminded his countrymen that in the 2009 elections democracy would again be tested, and therefore it was time to respond to the historical challenge by showing to the world that Indonesia had become mature in democracy.
"In 2004 we were able to show the world our outstanding achievement in conducting peaceful, orderly, safe, honest, and fair election," the president said.
He added that the achievement in the 2004 elections was due to good participation and contributions of all parties, namely the General Election Commission (KPU), provincial and regional administrations, National Defense Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri), the political parties, legislative candidates, presidential and vice presidential candidates who were able to engage in healthy competition and refrained from taking unnecessary actions.
The president expressed optimism that the achievement in the 2004 elections could be stepped up in this year's election by building a more meaningful democracy.
He also called on all political parties participating in this year's general election, to conduct their mass rallies in orderly and responsible ways by upholding existing election rules.
"Let us abide by the campaign schedule which has been set by KPU, and all the regulations which have been made. Let us carry out the process of democracy in civil ways," the president said.
And to all his countrymen, the president asked them to make the election a success by exercising their right to vote.
