KALLA : "I HAVE ALWAYS TRIED TO KEEP THE PEOPLE'S TRUST"
Medan, North Sumatra, March 17 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party Chairman Jusuf Kalla who is concurrently vice president said he had always tried to keep the public's trust because doing so was expected from a leader.
"I was able to settle a number of national problems such as the conflicts in Ambon, Maluku, Poso (Central Sulawes) and Aceh because the warring parties trusted me, and therefore I was able to o keep and maintain the people's trust," Kalla said at a gathering with Muslim clerics and intellectuals here on Tuesday.
According to Kalla, both the Muslim and Christian sides in the conflicts in Ambon and Poso trusted him to bring about a reconciliation.
"If I were a liar, nobody would have trusted me, and it is the characteristic of a leader to keep and maintain the people's trust," Kalla said.
On the occasion the Golkar Party chairman expressed his desire to run in this year's presidential race.
He said no country in the world would progress without peace. Therefore he continued to maintain the peaceful situation by holding friendship gathering with other political parties such as Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), United Development Party (PPP), and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
Jusuf Kalla was on a safari trip to Langkat, Binjai, and Medan in North Sumatra on Tuesday.
While in Binjai earlier in the day, Kalla said Golkar was a big party with a long history in the country and therefore it would continue to keep and maintain its mandate entrusted by the people.
"Believe it or not, Golkar with a long history will always keep its mandate entrusted by the people," Kalla said at a function to mark the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad in Binjai on Tuesday.
On the occasion, Kalla also asked for prayers and support that Golkar would gain victory in this year's general elections.
He said Golkar would continue to keep its mandate for people's welfare by realizing the provision of affordable basic necessaries without causing losses to farmers.
"To provide the people with affordable basic necessaries means that people can buy but it is not detrimental to farmers," Kalla said, adding that Golkar would continue to fight for the people's prosperity.
While in Langkat district, Kalla asked public figures, Muslim clerics, and the leader of Babusalam Islamic boarding school in the district to support his intention to run for president in July.
"I need the prayers and support of all public figures here to participate in this year's legislative and presidential elections. God willing, I will also contest the presidential election in the interest of the state and nation," Kalla said.
