BRITISH ENVOY MEETS PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT SUTIYOSO

Jakarta, March 17 (ANTARA) - British Ambassador to Indonesia, Martin Hatfull met with presidential aspirant Sutiyoso here on Monday to obtain information related to general election in the country.

Hatfull said his meeting with Sutiyoso was part of his task as British ambassador to Indonesia, and thus he added that he would also like to meet with all presidential aspirants to find out potential candidate.

"It's a pleasure to meet with Sutiyoso today, because it is part of my task as British ambassador to meet with other presidential aspirants who have potential to be elected as president," Hatfull said.

The British envoy opined that the process of democracy in Indonesia had already been on its right course, especially after the direct and democratic presidential election in 2004.

"I pay my close attention to the present situation and condition in Indonesia in the run up to the general elections. And the people in Britain as well highly appreciate rapid democratic development in Indonesia," Hatfull said.

He added that previous general election in 2004 had run peacefully and democratically, and therefore he expressed hope that this year's election would consolidate the already democratic development in Indonesia.

In addition, Hatfull said the election would also consolidate Indonesia's position as one of the largest democratic country in the world.

Asked about possible involvement of British government in the general elections in Indonesia and its expectation from the democratic festivity in the country, Hatfull said Britain was a country which respected the principle that it should not interfere the domestic policy of other countries.

Hatfull said his government would make a good cooperation with any presidential aspirant who would win the election to rule Indonesia later.

He expressed hope that the general elections in Indonesia this year would run smoothly, peacefully, democratically, and fairly.
