RI, PAKISTAN TO FINALIZE PTA LATE MARCH

Depok, W Java, March 17 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Pakistan are expected to finalize a preferential trade agreement (PTA) at the end of this month, a trade official said.

"Our target is to have all items in the PTA document agreed upon by both sides while its signing would be arranged later, and for this I am waiting answers from them," Director General for International Trade Cooperation of the Trade Ministry, Gusmardi Bustami said here on Tuesday.

The director general said that both sides had basically agreed a cut in the import duties of crude palm oil (CPO) and 'kino' orange.

"We have reached agreements on the reduction of CPO and 'kino' orange import duties. Pakistan agreed to cut its import duty for CPO to a level similar to that it imposes on Malaysia's," he said.

Indonesia meanwhile agreed to cut its import duty to five percent on Pakistan's kino orange which were imported in the November - March period. Regular import duty would however be imposed in the commodity if imported beyond the November-March period.

He said that Indonesia also asked that a number of its commodities would also be included in the PTA list, namely paper, sorbitol and ceramic.

"Then, they asked a cut in the import duties of 42 other tariff heads so that we suggested that the items should be mapped out first.

He said that most of the commodities in the 42 tariff heads were classified as textiles and textile products as well as leather goods.

"The import duties of the commodities are actually about 15 percent. We agreed to cut them to nine percent. Now they again asked a tariff cut similar to that of ASEAN, namely five percent," the director general said.

Gusmardi said that Indonesia proposed a one year probation to impose the reduced import duties on CPO and kino orange, while those for other commodities would be impose later.

"We will try (the import duties on the CPO and kino orange) first this year. Then the other proposals will be considered if our other requests are met," he said.
