RI, MALAYSIA CONDUCT HISTORY DIALOGUE

Jakarta, March 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Tuesday opened an Indonesia-Malaysia history dialogue to improve the relations between the two countries.

The dialogue, which was the idea of the two countries' Eminent Persons Group (EPG) established in July 2008, was opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

"I believe the dialogue would open a new horizon and view that could contribute to strengthening the relations between the two countries," he said at the event which was also attended by Malaysian prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and a number of other state officials of the two countries.

Each country sends seven representatives to the EPG and the seven EPG members of Indonesia are former vice president Try Sutrisno, the late former foreign minister Ali Alatas, former religious affairs minister Quraisy Shihab, former foreign ministry official Des Alwi Abubakar, state University of Indonesia lecuture and head of the Institute for Social Empowerment and Democracy, Musni Umar, state University of Indonesia lecturer and head of the Association of Verbal Traditions, Pudentia Maria Purenti Sri Suniarti and deputy chairman of the Permanent Committee for Multilateral Economic Cooperation and International Trade of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industy Wahyuni Bahar.

EPG members have a responsibility of and tasked with giving policy directions to their heads of state on efforts for increasing the two countries' relations.

The EPG was established upon Indonesia's proposal for a strategic purpose of increasing cooperation between the two countries in all fields such as manpower, fight against illegal logging, cultures, and solution to border problems.

The EPG members are expected to submit their first suggestions at the meeting between the two countries' heads of state this year.

The dialogue was held with a theme of "arousing collective historic memory of two nations" at Hotel Borobudur.

President Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Badawi each received the EPG's work report from the Indonesia EPG head Try Sutrisno and the Malaysia EPG head, Tun Musa Hitam.

President Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Badawi alike were of the view that the dialogue could help promote the cooperation between the two countries particularly with regard to increasing mutual understanding between the two countries through historic, cultural and educational approaches.

Try Sutrisno meanwhile said in his speech on the occasion that the relations between the two countries which had been up and down would be continued towards a positive direction.

Tun Musa Hitam meanwhile said the two countries could fill each other.
