POSITION OF RUPIAH STILL SAFE EARLY WEDNESDAY
Jakarta, March 18 (ANTARA) - The rupiah's position was still safe although its exchange rate slightly fell against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Wednesday morning.
"The position of the rupiah is still safe. It has been below the level of Rp12,000 per US dollar since last weekend. Although it falls now, there is nothing to be worried about," Kostaman Thayib, banking retail director of PT Bank Mega Tbk., said here on Wednesday.
The Indonesian currency traded at Rp11,970/11,985 per US dollar, down 10 points from Rp11,960/11,975 in the market's close a day earlier.
The local currency should have gone up as the US greenback weakened against the euro in the regional markets, but the domestic money market was rather different, he said.
Despite a positive issue, the rupiah in fact tumbled, he said, adding that it was all up to the supply and demand in the market.
However, it would be difficult for the rupiah to be away from the level of Rp12,000 per US dollar due to the increasing pressure of the global financial crisis and the national economic growth rate expected to be at 4 percent, he said.***
