BEI INDEX SURGES ON IMPROVED REGIONAL MARKET SENTIMENT

Jakarta, March 18 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened 0.62 percent higher early Wednesday on improved regional market sentiment.

The BEI index surged 8.240 points or 0.62 percent to 1,320.406.

Positive emotion in the regional market encouraged market players to buy shares, Edwin Sinaga, a capital market observer, said here on Wednesday.

Automotive industry shares gained significantly following share purchases in the automotive industry sector, he said.

"We are optimistic that the BEI index will still move up at the market's opening Wednesday noon, although the positive sentiment is only due an external factor," he said.

Automotive company Astra International shares went up Rp500 to Rp13,100 per share, United Tractor shares rose Rp100 to Rp5,500, Astra Agro Lestari shares advanced from Rp12,200 to Rp12,450 per share, Medco shares added from Rp2,025 to Rp2,175 per share, coal mining company Bukit Asam shares increased from Rp6,700 to Rp6,800 per share, and Indosat shares gained from Rp4,375 to Rp4,425 per share.

State telecommunication company PT Telkom shares rose Rp50 to Rp10,250, and Bank Danamon shares went up from Rp2,450 to Rp2,475 per share.

The rupiah early Wednesday traded at Rp11,970/11,985 per US dollar, down 10 points from Rp11,960/11,975 at the market's close a day earlier.***
