SIDOARJO MUD FLOW VICTIMS RALLY OUTSDIE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE
Jakarta, March 18 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of Sidoarjo mud flow victims staged a rally outside the presidential palace here on Wednesday to demand government-sanctioned compensation payments from the company whose well drilling activity had caused the disaster.
The Sidoarjo residents who had lost their homes and land by the mud flow demanded that PT Llapindo Brantas pay the compensations in accordance with provisions in Presidential Decree No 14/2007 (Pepres 14/2007).
They started the rally at 10 in the morning but at 1 in the afternoon the protesters were still seen siting on the sidewalks of Jalan Merdeka Utara, the street in front of the presidential palace in central Jakarta.
But antiriot police eventually drove the demonstrators away.
The protesters, grouped in the Perpres 14/2007 Supporting Movement (Geppres), during their rally recited verses from the Koran.
PT Lapindo Brantas had previously decided to pay each displaced family compensation at a rate of Rp15 million per month. But the demonstrators rejected this formula as it contradicted provisions in Perpres 14/2007.
Besides the rally outside the presidential palace, another demonstration, organized by the Federation of Indonesian Metal Worker Unions (PPSMI), took place in front of the Attorney General's Office in south Jakarta.
The workers protested the arrest of a number of their colleagues by the Cikarang district prosecutor's office in relation with a forgery case.***
