BATAM IMMIGRATION DETAINS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM PAKISTAN, AFGHANISTAN

Batam, Indonesia, March 18 (ANTARA) - Batam immigration officers detained four illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday.

"They entered Batam through a public seaport from Malaysia, but we don't know exactly from Johor or somewhere else...." Batam Immigration Office Head Dirman Sukardi said here on Wednesday.

He said Ali Rizwan and Ali Rajab from Pakistan and Azizullah Nasrullah and Mohammad Ebrahim from Afghanistan were arrested at Hang Nadim Airport in Batam, on Tuesday when they were about to take a flight to Jakarta.

"They entered Batam on Monday evening and we caught them on Tuesday," Dirman Sukardi said.

The four illegal immigrants wanted to go to Jakarta to seek asylum in Australia, he said.

According to them, they entered Malaysia legally on March 10, 2009. But they went to Batam by a speedboat through a small seaport illegally.

"In fact, they had complete documents," Sukardi said.

The immigration officers and concerned authorities still investigated the motive of the illegal immigrants, he said.

During the investigation, the four foreigners are being detained at the local immigration office.

Meanwhile, Ali Rajab of Pakistan said he fled his country in fear of being killed in relation with the ongoing conflict in the South Asian country. ***
