INDONESIAN GOVT ALLOCATES RP200 BILLION FOR BIRD FLU RESEARCH

Surabaya, East Java, March 19 (ANTARA) - The government has allocated Rp200 billion in funds to finance research on bird flu (Avian Influenza/AI) and efforts to prevent and mitigate the spread of the disease, a minister said.

"We have allocated funds totaling Rp200 billion annually for that. Foreign financial assistance is also available, but it's still under our control," Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said after speaking at an international symposium on bird flu at the University of Airlangga (UNAIR) here on Thursday.

The minister said the health ministry had a standard mechanism concerning the government's funds allocation and the spending of foreign financial assistance for bird flu researches.

"There is a selection, and only those having good quality will be approved. Researches using foreign donation also has its own mechanism," he said.

Meanwhile, Agus Purwadianto, head of the health ministry's health research and development agency, said that the ministry had a plan map on bird flu researches.

Researches on bird flu were directed at finding detection and diagnostic techniques of bird flu on human and the development of bird flu vaccines for human, he said.

He said the government has begun to conduct researches on production of bird flu vaccine for human. The researches are being carried out in a laboratory of the Surabaya-based University of Airlangga and three others in Jakarta.***
