KPK PROBING GRAFT INVOLVING NATUNA OIL PRODUCTION SHARING FUNDS

Jakarta, March 19 (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating an alleged corruption case involving oil production-sharing funds in Natuna district, Riau Islands, sources at the anti-graft body said.

"We are now conducting an investigation on an alleged corruption case with regard to oil production sharing in Natuna," KPK Deputy Chairman Chandra M. Hamzah said when asked to confirm a report about it on Thursday.

Chandra said that a KPK team had been sent to Natuna several days ago to help smoothen the investigation, but he refused to give details on the investigation process.

He however admitted that the fund whose case was being investigated amounted to Rp45 billion.

In a separate place, other KPK deputy chairman Haryono also confirmed that KPK was probing into the case in Natuna.

Haryono was not prepared however to disclose the modus of the suspected corruption of the oil production sharing funds.

He only smiled when asked whether the corruption was related to an attempt to bribe a certain party so that the production sharing deal would proceed smoothly.

"Just be patient, we are still examining it," he said.

Previously, the KPK team already arrived in Natuna to carry out investigation on a number of cases related to the alleged corruption.

On March 14, 2009, the KPK team questioned Natuna district head Daeng Rusnadi.

The questioning was in connection with alleged embezzlement of Natuna regional budget funds in 2004. Besides, the probe was also linked to the corruption allegation of Natuna district's oil production sharing funds in 2004.

The state is predicted to have suffered a loss of Rp60 billion in the management of the regional budget and oil production sharing funds. But funds whose use is believed to be unclear amounted to Rp46 billion.***
