FOUR RI STUDENTS WIN "ALLISON SUDRADJAT AWARDS 2009"

Brisbane, March 20 (ANTARA) - Four Indonesian students in Australia have won the prestigious "Allison Sudradjat Award 2009" (ASA 2009), according to information from the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) on Friday.

They are Sugeng Prayudi, an S2 student at Melbourne University; Muhammad Yusfidli Adhyaksana, an S3 student at Wollongong University; Meuthia Alvernia Naim, an S3 student at Griffith University; and Puspasarin Rahayu, also an S3 student at Curtin University.

The four Indonesian students and two other winners of ASA 2009 from Papua New Guinea were selected from among recipients of Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) scholarships.

With more than 150 recipients of ALA scholarships, the winners of ASA 2009 from Indonesia will participate in Leadership Development Conference 2009 in Canberra this week.

ASA is one of the prestigious awards from the Australian government in remembrance of Allison Sudradjat, AusAID representative who had served in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia for a long time until her death in a Garuda Indonesia plane accident in Indonesia's cultural city of Yogyakarta on March 7, 2007.

Besides Allison Sudradjat Awards scholarships, the Australian government also provides Australian Leadership Award scholarships to future young leaders from China, Fiji, Nepal, the Philippines, Vietnam, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Pakistan, Kambodia, Samoa, Nauru, Vanuatu, Sri Lanka, Laos, Tokelau, and Cook Islands.

According to Australian Embassy media release in Jakarta on Thursday, Indonesia's future leaders could start to apply to study in Australia in 2010 under the prestigious Australian Leadership Awards scholarships.

The Australian Leadership Awards constitute a regionally-competitive scholarship program that offers 150 awards annually for masters and doctoral study in Australia to future leaders from across Asia and the Pacific.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer said Indonesia had received the highest number of awards in the last two years, and he was confident that Indonesians would continue to show their leadership potential in this year's round of applications.

In addition to studying for postgraduate qualifications, awardees also discuss and debate emerging leadership issues with their regional neighbors through a tailored leadership development program.

The priority themes for 2010 are highly relevant to development in Indonesia and the region. They include disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation.

Applications for 2010 open on 19 March 2009 and close on 30 June 2009.
