S. Korea to seek development of Tumen River

SEOUL, March 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will seek ways to cooperatively develop the Tumen River through a U.N.-backed program, whose next meeting will be held in Mongolia, officials said Saturday.

The 10th round of the Tumen River Area Development Program (TRADP) meetings will
be held in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, from March 24-25, the Ministry
of Strategy and Finance said.
The meeting will be attended by four other countries -- North Korea, China,
Russia and Mongolia, the ministry said.
The countries plan to discuss ways of expanding the development of the Tumen
River, including investment from the private sector, it said.
TRADP, which aims at developing the river and neighboring areas into a logistics
and transportation hub for Northeast Asia, was launched in 1992 under the
sponsorship of the U.N. Development Programme.
The river runs through the northern edge of North Korea into China and Russia and
empties into the East Sea.
