KALLA SPEAKS BEFORE 80,000 GOLKAR SUPPORTERS IN MAKASSAR

Makassar, Indonesia, March 21 (ANTARA) - Golkar Party leader Jusuf Kalla spoke before some 80,000 party cadres and sympathizers at a campaign rally at Karebosi Square here Saturday.

"We apologize to the people and party supporters who could not enter the campaign area," because of the lack of space, Ilham Arief Sirajuddin, chairman of the party's South Sulawesi chapter, said.

The crowd outside the campaign area eventually boarded their vehicles and rode around Makassar city in a peaceful convoy. .

Ilham said the rally had drawn so many people that the square could not accommodate all of them. Each of the party's legislative candidates had mobilized at least 500 people to come to the rally so that the size of the audience had become bigger than the square's capacity.

A three-week open campaign was nationally kicked off on Monday (March 16) and will last until April 5.

A total of 38 political parties and six local parties in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province will participate in the legislative elections on April 9, prior to the presidential election in July 8, 2009.

According to Ilham, apart from tight security guard in featuring Jusuf Kalla who is concurrently vice president and executive board chairman of the Golkar party, a great number of the party's supporters also prefered to wait outside the campaign area due to the heat of the sun.

On the occasion, in addition to distributing the party's attributes, party cadres also presented a number of mobile phone sets to various supporters.

Ilham, however, denied that the mobile phones came from the party's central executive board. It was purely a spontaneous inititiative of the rally's local organizers, he said.***
