LIGHTNING KILLS ONE, LEAVES 34 OTHERS WOUNDED
Batam, Indonesia, March 21 (ANTARA) - A strong lightning storm left one person dead and 34 others seriously injured at a football field in Tanjung Sebauk village in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands province, at 5:30 local time on Saturday evening.
Tanjungpinang police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Yusri Yunus said the fatality was identified as Supanti, a 15-year old female student of a local school.
Yusri Yunus said the people were hit by the lightning when they were watching a football game at the field.
The wounded victims were then rushed to Tanjungpinang public hospital but after undergoing medical treatment, some of them were permitted to leave the hospital later.
He said the local authorities should alert and educate the people, especially farmers in the rural areas on how to protect themselves from unexpected lighting storms.***
