MEGAWATI HOPES TO WIN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN ONE ROUND
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, March 21 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDIP) Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri said the party must do all it can to win the presdeintial election in July in just one round,
"The PDIP has assigned me to run for presidency and therefore I ask the party's cadres and political mechine throughout the country to win the presidential election in one round," she said in her political oration at a campaign rally in Slemat district, Yogyakarta, on Saturday.
Megawati said in the 2004 presidential election, she failed to win a runoff poll.
"This year, it is not necessary to hold a second round election, so that I should be able to garner 50 percent of the votes plus one in the first round. To that end, the party must make a good consolidation at the cadre-level and our political machines," she said.
According to her, with the support of party e cadres and the people, the 2004 failure could be compensated in the 2009 election.
"I really hope for ther serious support of all cadres to struggle for the victory in this year's general election," she said.
The PDIP leader also reminded all party cadres to remain alert signs of possible fraud in vote counting. "The process of vote-casting and vote counting should be watched over in order not to cause disadvantage to PDIP."***
