S. Korea drubs Venezuela 10-2 to reach WBC final
(ATTN: RECASTS lead; UPDATES with remarks from S. Korean manager, more details from
para 5)
LOS ANGELES, March 21 (Yonhap) -- Choo Shin-soo belted a three-run homer and Kim
Tae-kyun added a two-run shot to lead South Korea to a 10-2 rout of error-prone
Venezuela Saturday and to the final of the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
With the win, reigning Olympic champion South Korea will face off against the
winner of Sunday's U.S.-Japan semifinal for the title of baseball's premier
tournament at Dodger Stadium on Monday.
South Korea scored five runs in the top of the first inning as Cleveland Indians
outfielder Choo, who was 1-for-10 before the match, smacked the homer to center
field. Kim hit the long ball to left in the top of the second, making it 7-0.
Ko Young-min scored another run in the top of the fourth following a miscatch by
Venezuela's first baseman Miguel Cabrera. South Korea added two more runs in the
top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly and another catch error by Venezuela.
Melvin Mora singled in a run in the bottom of the third for Venezuela and Carlos
Guillen hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Venezuela, studded with
major leaguers, committed five errors.
Kim In-sik, manager of the South Korean team, said the game turned out be easier
than he earlier expected as Choo's home run prompted what he called a mood of
"ascendance."
"At the individual level, Venezuela certainly has many big major league players
who are definitely better players, but in baseball even major leaguers can be
brought to their knees if their opponents mood is one of ascendance and they play
hard," he said shortly after the game.
Kim also expressed a positive outlook for next week's final match, saying it did
not matter which of the semifinalists Japan or the United States came to face his
team as long as they use up as much strength as possible during their semifinal.
South Korea starter Yoon Seok-min tossed 6 1/3 strong innings for the win,
allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Carlos Silva
took the loss.
At the inaugural WBC, the Koreans settled for the final four. South Korea and
Japan split two games at the second round of this tournament, while the Olympic
champion did not played the United States as they were pooled separately.
