PME celebrates World Meteorological Day-2009
Jeddah, March 22, SPA -- Each year, on March 23, the World
Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the world-wide
meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a
chosen theme. This year, the theme is “Weather, climate and the air
we breathe”.
This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of
the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951,
WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.
Speaking on the occasion, Prince Turki bin Nasser bin Abdul Aziz,
General President of Meteorology and Environment (PME) said "the PME
receives all support from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King
Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz and the Crown Prince as of other governmental
bodies through the provision of all means possible to do its part as
required. Currently, it has become an active partner in the
international system since the beginning of works in the field of
meteorology".
"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia deals fully with the international
community to exchange information, experiences and scientific
research, studies, and it still plays its role in the development
plans of the work of the PME and implementation of these plans at all
levels national, regional and international," he said.
The Kingdom is aware of all challenges and problems associated with
the field of meteorological services in all WMO regions, he added.
He also disclosed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been working
in the development of its observation systems which are commensurate
with the global advances in this area and has been supporting its
centers spread in all regions with the necessary modern techniques
that contribute to the accuracy of meteorological works. "This was
quite clear during the recent weather fluctuations during which PME
was able to provide concerned local and global bodies with important
initial information to warn them of the danger of sudden changes in
weather which had afflicted various regions recently".
