TWO QUAKES HIT WEST PAPUA


Bengkulu, March 22 (ANTARA) - Two earthquakes measuring 5.5 and 5.1 respectively on the Richter scale rocked West Papua province on Sunday.
The epicenter of the first quake which struck at 07.46 a.m. local time was 139 km northwest of the provincial capital Manokwari at a depth of 10 km, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMEG) said.
The agency said the second quake which broke out at 10.51 a.m was centered 106 km northeast of Sorong at a depth of 21 km.
Sunday's earthquakes were the latest in a series of quakes that affected the province in recent months.
Since early this month six moderate quakes have hit West Papua.
A powerful quake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale rattled Manokwari on January 4, 2009, killing four people and injuring 31 others. ***3***
