U.N. official on anti-terrorism to visit Seoul this week
SEOUL, March 23 (Yonhap) -- A senior U.N. official in charge of anti-terrorism efforts will visit South Korea later this week to review the implementation of a Security Council resolution, the foreign ministry said Monday, a week after attacks were made on Koreans visiting Yemen.
Michael Smith, executive director of the U.N. Counter-Terrorism Executive
Directorate, is scheduled to make a trip here from Wednesday to Saturday, during
which he will meet Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo and anti-terrorism
ambassador Lee Joon-kyu.
Smith, who has the rank of assistant secretary general, will be briefed on South
Korea's implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1373, which was
adopted days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The
resolution is aimed at placing barriers on the movement, organization and
fund-raising activities of terrorist groups.
"He will also exchange opinions (with the South Korean officials) on the
terrorist bomb attack against South Korean people in Yemen," ministry spokesman
Moon Tae-young said.
The March 15 bombing killed four South Korean tourists and wounded three others
who were on a group tour to the terrorism-prone Middle Eastern nation.
