PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO DISCUSSES VARIOUS ISSUES WITH MINISTERS
Jakarta, March 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono held a meeting with a number of cabinet ministers here on Monday to discusss various issues including permanent voters' list (DPT).
In his opening speech the President said there was one main issue and two additional issues to be discussed at the meeting.
He said discussion on security and politics would be done following reports of a problem in the list of permanent voters for the upcoming legislative election on April 9.
He said there must be proactive actions by all parties so that it could be settled well.
"I am monitoring the development in the community including statements from several political figures impressing that something in the DPT had been wrong. I wish the government will be proactive. It must do what it could to help the General Elections Commission (KPU) so that what must not happen will not happen to assure a smooth, fair and just election," he said.
He said the government also wished to encourage the General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the General Elections Monitoring Committee (Panwaslu) and all parties directly concerned with the preparation of the DPT to give explanation about it to the public.
"Tell the people what the problem really is. Do not let restlessness to occur before the election takes place. Yesterday I asked the coordinating minister for legal, security and political affairs and his staff to discuss steps we have to take to improve the DPT," he said.
On economic issues the President meanwhile said that they would discuss the development of the economic stimulus program.
"Proactive and rational steps are needed to minimize the impact of the crisis. This policy has been put in our national budget. We will see how is implemented although it is still at an initial stage," he said.
On the issue of public welfare President Yudhoyono meanwhile said that they would discuss the development of the implementation of pro-people programs such as the National Program of Self-Sufficient Community Empowerment (PNPM) and the Smallholders' Credit Scheme (KUR).
"I wish in the midst of current crisis we could protect our economically-weak brothers and safeguard their purchasing power," he said.
The ministers attending the meeting included home affairs minister Mardiyanto, Coordinating for Legal, Security and Political Affairs Widodo AS, acting Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Social Affairs Minister Bachtiar Chamsah, National Police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Defense Forces Commander General Djoko Santoso and chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Syamsir Siregar.
