OANA PRESIDENT EXPECTS XINHUA TO PLAY LEADERSHIP ROLE

Jakarta, March 23 (ANTARA) - President of the Organization of Asia Pacific News Agencies (Oana), Dr Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf, is expecting Chinese news agency Xinhua's leadership's role in the organization.

"We hope Xinhua would play a leadership role in OANA," said Mukhlis who is also president director of Indonesia's news agency LKBN ANTARA during a meeting with Xinhua's Vice President Lie Yeu here on Monday.

Mukhlis, flanked by director of ANTARA's editorial affairs, Saiful Hadi, during the meeting also referred to the recent meeting of the OANA Executive Board in Baku, Azerbaijan, in which they encouraged exchange of news among members through their internet channels.

He said most OANA members were already making use of the channels by sending their news and photos on events in their respective countries.

OANA which was established on December 22 1961 in Bangkok has 41 news agency members in 33 countries in the Asia Pacific region. In the future the organization plans to also exchange audio-video reports.

Mukhlis said he would support Xinhua if it would run for OANA presidency in the general assembly in 2010 and host an OANA conference afterwards on the living environment in cooperation with the UNEP.

On the occasion Saiful Hadi suggested exchange of journalists and photographers between the two news agencies.

"Indonesia which has majority Moslem population will certainly be interested to see the development of Chinese Moslems in that country and the Chinese would probably be also interested to see the development of ethnic Chinese in the country including for example the third generation of Chinese immigrants in West Kalimantan," he said.

Saiful said through the exhange program, cooperation between the two sides could be improved.

He said ANTARA would also become a display window for Xinhua's products as Indonesia would soon have a television station broacasting in Mandarin.

Liu Yeu welcomed ANTARA's offer to increase cooperation beyond what had been carried out so far.

He said "the two news agencies have a strong influence in their respective countries."
He would refer the offer to Xinhua's leadershp for a decision. "We will discuss it further in September," he said.

In September Xinhua would host a "World Media Summit 2009" in Beijing.

Mukhlis expressed his readiness to attend the event that would also be attended by top media leaders in the world.

During the meeting the two sides also exchanged information on the development of their agencies in the midst of current information technology development.
