TWO FEMALE PROSECUTORS DETAINED FOR ECSTASY TRAFFICKING
Jakarta, Mar 23 (ANTARA) - The anti-narcotics unit of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police on Monday detained two female public prosecutors as suspects in an ecstasy trafficking case and were questioning another prosecutor as a witness.
"We detained the two public prosecutors after sufficient evidence was collected in two questioning sessions. They are now being held at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police's detention center for drug offenders," director of the Jakarta Police's anti-drug directorate, Senior Commissioner Arman Depari, said here Monday.
The two suspects were identiified as Esther Tanak dan Dara Veranita, and the witness was Sovi Marissa.
Before questioning the three public prosecutors, the police had requested and obtained permission from Attorney General Hendarman Supandji as required in Law No 16/2004 on the authority and functions of public prosecutors, Depari said.
Police officers had seized 343 ecstasy pills from the suspects as evidence.
The first clue to the suspects' involvment in drug trafficking was obtained from two men arrested recently for dealing in ecstasy. They were Zaenanto, a casual employee at the police precinct in Pademangan in north Jakarta, and Adjunct Inspector Irfan, a police officer at the same precinct who were in possession of 300 ecstasy pills.
Both men confessed they had obtained the drugs from public prosecutor Esther who was working at the public prosecutor's office in North Jakarta. A further investigation led police to conclude two other prosecutors were involved, namely Dara dan Sovi.
In a search of Esther's work place, police found 43 ecstasy pills.
Police believe the public prosecutors had acquired the esctasy from a stock of exhibits in drug cases they were handling at the North Jakarta District Court.
