INDIA EXPLORING COMMODITY TRADE COOPERATION WITH SOUTH SULAWESI

Makassar, March 23 (ANTARA) - India is exploring the possibility of commodity trade cooperation with South Sulawesi, which is one of Indonesia's commodity producing regions.

Indian ambassador to Indonesia Biren Nanda in a visit to the region on Monday said the move was taken as a follow up to the trade cooperation agreement signed by the two countries in 2005.

He said the Indian government wished it could sign a memorandum of understanding for the cooperation later with the South Sulawesi provincial administration.

South Sulawesi has so far exported several important commodities to India such as pinetree sap.

The result of the cooperation between the two countries was reported to have been able to increase income for the two countries.
From January to February 2009 India could increase its income by around 64 percent from last year to US$9.4 million bill through the trade cooperation with the region.

South Sulawesi governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo expressed the region's readiness to cooperate with India, saying "a number of commodities such as nickel and agricultural produce is abundant in South Sulawesi."
He said it was important for the offer to be followed up with an agreement including determining the concept of cooperation that would benefit the two parties.
