MINISTER: RI STILL LUCKY FOR HAVING POSITIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH
Jakarta, March 23 (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said countries with an economic growth were quite lucky despite the ongoing global economic crisis, showing a negative growth of 1.5 to 0.5 percent.
"This is a reality that should be faced. Global economic growth has been negative and therefore whoever is able to record positive growth is good," Sri Mulyani, keynote speaker in a Seminar on East Asia's Response to the Global Economic Crisis, said here on Monday.
"The dimension of crisis keeps changing from time to time. The latest shows a serious development. Changes are no longer set on yearly or quarterly basis, as revised growth rates can be monthly to anticipate future growth," he said.
The beginning of the 2009 state budget was set on the basis of assumed economic growth of about 6.0 percent, but by studying the ongoing developments the target had to be revised to 5.0 percent.
At last, the government estimated the economic growth in 2009 at 4.0 percent to 5.0 percent with a middle level of 4.5 percent.
To face this condition, she further said, the government was in need of globally and regionally coordinated policies.
The governments of the United States and European countries should not be in a hurry to clear all kinds of problematic assets. Whatever would happen in the future will spread to other countries including Indonesia.
In domestic affairs, the minister said Indonesia needed such cyclical counter policy to overcome the impact of the crisis that may exacerbate another country's economic condition.
"East Asia specially the ASEAN plus three countries has fostered regional cooperation. We have to learn from one another on how to carry out cyclical developments," she said.
According to her, Indonesia had made a quick anticipation after learning the 1997/98 economic crisis, most important were credibility, confidence and government trust.
"These are crucial assets to overcome the crisis," he said.
